Overview
Designed and assembled a hands-free wearable that detects nearby obstacles with ultrasonic sensors and provides real-time audio feedback to the user.
Objective
Significant sensor noise in confined spaces required tuning timing parameters and filtering out stray distance readings. The ergonomic challenge of a wearable form factor demanded careful placement of the sensor array. Relaying information without perceptible delay was solved by requiring 3 consistent consecutive readings before triggering audio output.
Approach
Iterative prototyping of the housing CAD to find an ergonomic mount position. Noise reduction via software filtering before triggering the audio pipeline. Conditional logic in the main loop ensures only stable, repeated readings reach the user.
Results
- —90 % detection-distance accuracy
- —Demonstrated viability as a real assistive product for daily use by visually impaired individuals
