CubeSense
2×2 Rubik's Cube Solver Robot
A robot that scans, solves, and physically rotates a 2×2 Rubik's Cube to a solved state in under 11 moves.
Overview
Built a robot capable of scanning, solving, and physically rotating a 2×2×2 Rubik's Cube. Combined state detection, algorithmic path planning, and motor control for reliable execution.
Objective
Colour-sensor readings were noisy under changing ambient light — fixed by switching from fixed thresholds to full-scale RGB values. On-board memory limitations restricted solver depth; computation was offloaded to a laptop with move-sets transmitted back to the robot.
Approach
Custom servo-driven gripper arms hold and rotate each face. State is read via colour sensors on each face; solutions are computed off-board and streamed back over serial. All axes use closed-loop position control.
Results
- —100 % rotation accuracy on all axes
- —Solves any scrambled state in ≤ 11 moves
- —Featured at the department showcase as one of the top projects
